Compelling communications for New Zealand’s science and technology sectors.
SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY

Science communication is a specialist skill.
Effective science communication takes more than knowing the science.
It means translating technical findings and uncertainty into information that different audiences understand and enjoy, without losing accuracy.
Investing in science communications could make all the difference to your project by reducing misunderstanding, countering misinformation, winning hearts and minds and increasing people’s scientific literacy and knowledge about what you do and why it matters.

Exciting science, understood through considered marketing and communications.
Science communication is the art of turning technical information, including uncertainty and methodology, into plain-language information.
We start by working out who needs to know ‘what’ and ‘why’ so we can tailor communications to your audience. Your public, policymakers, government funders, partners and investors may need different communications approaches.
Media engagement is a core part: developing a genuine news angle, preparing spokespeople, pitching to the right outlet and giving journalists background, experts, visuals and fast responses.
Risk and issues management is also key to robust science communications, to prevent a potential risk or actual incident becoming a reputational crisis that will damage your social licence to operate.
There are commercial benefits too: clear, compelling communications help attract collaborators, talent and investment. Measurement and tracking of how your communications are performing (eg, coverage quality, message pickup and sentiment) means we are using evidence-based, cost-effective techniques.
With more than a decade of experience in specialist science communications and a full-service team across public relations, communications, marketing, digital and design, we can bring your science to people’s attention.
See below for examples of how we can help, or jump straight to (just some of) our previous client work.

MEDIA RELATIONS AND TRAINING
Achieving positive and balanced media coverage:
Building relationships with reporters, writers and commentators to inform them and facilitate stories.
Providing media relations support to project leads.
Providing reactive responses to media on issues as they arise, in a fast-turnaround media environment.
Providing one-off and regular media training for your scientists and executive leadership team to ensure they are ready to answer both the obvious and the tricky questions.
Organising and accompanying media at site tours and official launches.
Pictured: The launch of the Bioeconomy Science Institute’s (previously Plant & Food Research) new flume tank in Nelson attracted a scrum of major media outlets. We facilitated their visit so that each reporter left with the audio, video, photographs, angle and quotes they each needed for their different stories.

INFOGRAPHICS AND GRAPHIC DESIGN
Making complex information understandable, through:
Creating simple graphics that tell the story.
Creating animated explainers, infographics and fact sheets that explain your science without ‘dumbing it down’.
Producing science posters, presentations and templates that your scientists can use to communicate their work while maintaining your organisation’s brand integrity and high standards for graphic design.
Creating graphics to fit any space online and on screen – adverts that put a pause in people’s scrolling, designs for digital billboards and social media tiles that make your message unmissable.

CRISIS AND ISSUES MANAGEMENT
Preparing you to be at your best, on your worst day:
Preparing crisis communications plans aligning to the risks identified for your project or business.
Being prepared means that you can bring your best, on your worst day, and prevent a crisis from creating deep reputational damage that lasts longer than the effects of the crisis event.
Being on stand-by for our clients to support them through an emergency event or issue, around the clock.
Freeing you up from media engagement or other requirements, allowing you to focus on leading your organisation and stakeholders through an event.

SAMPLES OF SCIENCE
From media management and crisis communications to high-profile events that bring senior government officials to our region, we love seeing science take its place in the spotlight. Contact us to help shine a light on yours.
Science communication is key for many sectors. We produced this video and science-backed 3D data visualisation for the NZ Federation of Commercial Fishermen.
We know that science is front-page news, but achieving this requires a deft hand in science communications and great photography to illustrate what is often out of sight of the public eye.
Publik led media planning and acted as the liaison for a high-profile event, the opening of New Zealand's largest flume tank facility.
Publik supported Kimer Med with corporate communications when the Nelson-based biotech company opened a $4 million raise to complete its $14 million Series A funding round.
Using our influence to amplify, we broadened the reach of the Bioeconomy Science Institute (previously Plant & Food Research) and Massey University's science to Seafood NZ's audiences on social media.
Celebrating the launch of NZ’s largest flume tank. From left Mark Piper and Helen Palmer (Bioeconomy Science Institute) and Hon Shane Jones, Minister for Oceans and Fisheries.
Publik fine-tuned Cawthron's refreshed branding and produced a range of collateral designed to inspire hearts and minds.
Cawthron not only stands by their values, they invest in them, bringing Publik on board to produce a range of collateral such as posters and thank-you cards.
It is important to agritech company Sipcam that customers have the opportunity to understand the biochemistry of their products.
When we design advertising for Sipcam we showcase a product while explaining the science behind it.
A bold, vibrant background banner Publik designed for Cawthron to roll-out at its events.
We facilitated a tour of Marine AI's autonomous vessel with then-Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology Hon Judith Collins.
