SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY
Compelling communications for New Zealand’s science and technology sectors.

Science communication is a specialist skill.
Effective science communication takes more than knowing the science.
It means translating technical findings and uncertainty into information that different audiences understand and enjoy, without losing accuracy.
Investing in science communications could make all the difference to your project, by reducing misunderstanding, countering misinformation, winning hearts and minds and increasing people’s scientific literacy and knowledge about what you do and why it matters.

Playing in the big blue backyard: Plant & Food Research Group are leading the way in open ocean aquaculture science.
Exciting science, understood.
Science communication is the art of turning technical information, including uncertainty and methodology, into plain-language information.
We start by working out who needs to know ‘what’ and ‘why’ so we can tailor communications to your audience. Your public, policymakers, government funders, partners and investors may need different communications approaches.
Media engagement is a core part: developing a genuine news angle, preparing spokespeople, pitching to the right outlet and giving journalists background, experts, visuals and fast responses.
Risk and issues management is key to robust science communications, to prevent a potential risk or actual incident becoming a reputational crisis that will damage your social licence to operate.
There are commercial benefits, too: clear, compelling communications help attract collaborators, talent and investment. And measurement and tracking of how your communications are performing (eg coverage quality, message pickup and sentiment) means we are using evidence-based, cost-effective techniques.

SAMPLES OF SCIENCE
From media management and crisis communications to high-profile events that bring senior government officials to our region, we love seeing science take its place in the spotlight.
Photography in the field. A shot from a Plant & Food Research photoshoot (now the New Zealand Institute for Bioeconomy Science).
Science communcation is key for many sectors. We made this video and data visualisation for the NZ Fish Federation.
We know that science is front-page news, but achieving this requires a deft hand in science communications and great photography to illustrate what is often out of sight of the public eye.
Publik led media planning and liaison for a high-profile event, the opening of New Zealand's largest flume tank facility.
Publik supported Kimer Med with corporate communications when the Nelson-based biotech company opened a $4 million raise to complete its $14 million Series A funding round.
Plant & Food Research Group's Dr Maren Wellenreuther leads cutting-edge seafood production science workstreams. Publik broadened the reach of her work to a wider audience through our work with another client, Seafood NZ.

Using our influence to amplify, we broadened the reach of Plant & Food Research and Massey University's science to Seafood NZ's audiences on social media.
Publik fine-tuned Cawthron's refreshed branding and produced a range of collateral designed to inspire hearts and minds.
Cawthron not only stand by their values, they invest in them, bringing Publik on board to produce a range of collateral such as posters and thank-you cards.
It is important to agritech company Sipcam that customers have the opportunity to understand the biochemistry of their products.
When we design advertising for Sipcam we showcase a product while explaining the science behind it.
We facilitated a tour of Marine AI's autonomous vessel for the Minister of Science, Innovation and Technology Hon Judith Collins.
